Over five decades, Bernd and Hiller Becher accumulated an exhaustive photographic archive documenting the architecture of heavy industry. Their uniform black and white pictures identify typographies of industrial structures, many of which have since been demolished.
Now Thom and Beth Atkinson have adopted a comparable approach in their project, 'Missing Buildings'. In these photographs residential buildings that disappeared long ago are once again brought into focus. Beautiful compositions present seemingly unremarkable spaces that resonate with absence and propose a reversal of time. From the quiet moment of each exposure, they take us back some 70 years to a scene of architectural continuity interrupted by a moment of violent destruction.
